Edward Van Winkle was born in New Jersey in 1879, the son of Mary J. Van Winkle. He married Sama Le Roy Batdorf (1879-1972) around 1900, and they lived in Brooklyn, New York, and Piscataway, New Jersey, with their daughter Gertrude (b. ca. 1905). In September 1917, Van Winkle attended military training at American University in Washington, D.C., and in November 1917 he joined the 24th Engineer Regiment.
